Special Events

Water Safety Awareness

In the Land of 10,000 Lakes, teaching children how to be safe around water is not a luxury; it is a necessity.  Water Safety Awareness can help you make sure kids learn essential water safety skills, which can open a world of possibilities for them.  The YMCA, WCER and a host of community sponsors are collaborating to bring Water Safety Awarness to the Dorothy Olson Aquatic Center on June 10th.  3 different class times will be available for FREE!

This class is for kids ages 6 to 11 years old who do NOT know how to swim.  (Non-swimmers only) Parents are invited to participate in on-deck water safety classes at the same time students are in the water.  Somali and Spanish translators will be available as well as FREE bus transportation.  Please click on the flyer information for more details, registration and bussing.

Healthy Kids Day

One in three U.S. children is obese, and when summertime hits, kids will be more idle. Research shows that without access to out-of-school physical and learning activities, kids fall behind academically and gain weight twice as fast during summer than the school year. Healthy Kids Day will help parents begin thinking early about what their kids need to grow and achieve all summer long.

On Thursday, April 27th, from 5:00 to 7:30 PM the YMCA is holding a FREE Community Event to inspire more kids to keep their minds and bodies active.  Healthy Kids Day is the Y’s national initiative to improve health and well-being for kids and families, and features fun active play, inflatable games, swimming, healthy snacks, prize drawings and educational activities to motivate and teach families how to develop healthy routines at home.  Children age 4 - 4th grade and their families are invited to participate in Healthy Kids Day.  Participants should dress for an active evening and bring a swimsuit and towel for the family if you wish to stay later to enjoy our pool from 7:30-8:30 PM.  Please call Katie at 222-9622 for more information about this annual event.

Child Care Center

COMMITMENT TO QUALITY

Our Child Care program is a licensed Child Care Program that is committed to quality. Our program is designed to meet the developmental needs of young children ages 6 weeks through 5 years as a Kindergarten readiness program. We provide experiences that enhance and enrich each child's cognitive, language, social, emotional, physical and creative development. We believe that experiences during the early years of life influence how children view their world, how they relate to others and their ability to succeed as learners. Within the center's daily schedule, each child has opportunities to create, to explore the environment, to develop problem solving and personal interaction skills and to develop concepts through experiences.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT

Children develop a positive self-concept through a balance of self-directed activities and teacher-assisted activities. Staff serves as positive role models and provide care that is supportive, nurturing, warm and responsive to each child's needs. Lesson plans and daily reports are shared with the parents weekly and daily. Parents are provided weekly email newsletters to stay current on weekly events and family events planned in the future. This allows parents to become even more involved in their child's classroom experience. We operate under all licensing regulations set forth by the Minnesota Department of Human Services Division of Licensing.  In addition, we implement criteria created from the Minnesota Parent Aware rating scale and aim to receive the highest level rating possible as well as incorporate guidelines developed by the YMCA of the USA.

GOALS
Our programs are designed with developmentally appropriate activities that stimulate a child’s intellectual, social, emotional and physical growth. We provide a warm, caring and fun environment that stimulates their natural curiosity and encourages personal expression. Children develop communication, reasoning and problem-solving skills through play, interaction with other children, and exploration of their environment. At the core of all YMCA programs we teach values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

CURRICULUM
The Y uses The Creative Curriculum® as the foundation for creating the best programs for children.  The result is a comprehensive curriculum with a clean organizational structure and a particular focus on routines and learning experiences. Developmentally appropriate programs foster joyful and purposeful learning while they address specific needs.

YMCA Child Care Curriculum is developed from the following:

  • Specific needs and interests of the children
  • Talents and abilities of staff
  • Creative and safe opportunities to learn through play
  • Resources within the YMCA and the surrounding community
  • An active Parent Advisory Committee

HOURS OF OPERATION: 6:45 AM – 5:45 PM, Monday through Friday. We offer daily rates, weekly rates (up to 45 hours of Care) and extended weekly rates (45 hours or more) to fit the needs of most families.
