REopening the YMCA and what you need to know

When the Y does reopen, we will be reopening in phases with limitations and restrictions required for social distancing and additional safety precautions.  


Update from the CEO

September 8 Re-opening Additions
On September 8, the following changes will be made:
Fitness Classes

  • 5:45 AM Boot Camp Classes and all 9:00 AM Fitness Classes will be relocated to the gym to allow for increased attendance.  Max of 15, Reservations are required. 
  • All cycling classes and remainder of Group Fitness Classes will be held in Studio A.  Maximum registration for these classes is 9 members.
  • New Group Exercises Schedule with Saturday Classes.   

Pool

  • New Pool Schedule for September with additional and new lap and family swim times and additional water aerobics classes.
  • No September Swim Lessons.  Lessons will resume in October.   

Fitness Center

  • 13 - 15 year old members will be allowed to use the fitness center with parent/guardian supervision.  A reservation for each person is required.  

Locker Rooms

  • The Family Locker Room will be open with Max Capacity of 9 members.  

Reservations are still required for fitness center, fitness classes, child watch, lap swim, family swim, water fitness classes, racquetball, and pickleball.  Reservations are not required for locker room usage.

Phase 3 Reopening Details

On September 8, the following changes will be made:

  • Lockers will not be available due to safety and privacy issues. Members should keep their belongings with them. Swimmers may store their belongings in the laundry baskets on the pool deck.
  • There are one-way routes through the locker rooms to eliminate congestion. Please follow signage.
  • Showers and bathrooms will be available, although some showers and toilet fixtures use may be suspended for social distancing.
  • Suit extractor is also available, but no congregation around the suit extractor is allowed.
  • In ALL Locker Rooms, one person is allowed at each vanity station at a time.
  • Scales will not be available in the locker rooms.
  • Social distancing of 6 feet apart, masks and handwashing is required.
  • The locker rooms will be closed each day from 1:45-2:45 pm to allow for deep cleaning. Surface cleaning will be done hourly. The Women’s Locker Room may close for 10 minutes each hour for surface cleaning, if female staff member is not available.
  • Phase 2 Reopening Details

    Pool check-in will be moved and hours for lap swim are expanded.

  • Lap Swim, Water Aerobics and Family Swim will check-in at YMCA front door.
  • Swim Lessons will continue to check in at the Pool Door.
  • Lap Swim will be added through reservations Monday-Friday from 6:00-6:45 am and 7:00-7:45 am. Please see the pool schedule for additional times.
  • July 20 addition:
  • Pool lobby will be opened for parent observation. Spots will be marked and chairs will need to stay in those spots for viewing.


  • Men's and Women's Locker Rooms will open.

  • Fitness Center Capacity will be expanded to 15 reservations allowed per time slot to bring the area to 25% capacity. This is the maximum allowed by the State of Minnesota.
  • Masks are still required to and from the Fitness Center, in all common areas.
  • July 20 addition:
  • 5:45 AM Classes will be relocated to Studio A due to sunrise times. This includes boot camp and cycling.
  • All cycling classes will be relocated to Studio A, due to equipment location.
  • Maximum registration for these classes is 9 members.
  • All other classes held outside weather permitting. If class is outside, max registration is 9 members, but additional members up to 24 are welcome to attend.
  • Phase 1 Reopening Details

    AS OF JUNE 1

    • Continuing Child Care at Willmar and Spicer ELC's
    • Youth Sports of Lacrosse and Soccer Skills Classes continue

    JUNE 8

    • Youth Swim Lesson Registration begins. Lessons begin June 15. Beginning Levels 1 & 2 for both preschool and grade school levels required a parent or guardian from the same household in the water with the child. Parent/Adult is not required for levels 3-6.
    • Summer Day Camp begins
    • Leaders In Training begins

    JUNE 8 - 10

    • Leaders In Training will conduct a Supply Drive to aid those adversely affected by the disturbing and unimaginable events in the Minneapolis and St. Paul areas. A list of supplies can be found on the Reopening Website page and supplies can be dropped off in the baskets outside the 24/7 main entrance at the Y. Supplies will be delivered by the LIT’s on Thursday, June 11 at one of the YMCA of the Greater Twin Cities locations for distribution.

    JUNE 10

    • Child Watch opens (M/W/F Morning only)
    • Outdoor Fitness Classes begin (yes, again)
    • Fitness Center (upstairs) opens

    JUNE 13

    • Racquetball and Pickleball will be available on Saturdays beginning June 13

    JUNE 15

    • Swim Lessons begin June 15.

    JUNE 17

    • Swimming Pool Lap Swim, Family Swim and Water Aerobics begin June 17 by reservation

    ALL of these activities will require pre-registration on-line or by calling the YMCA Welcome Center during business hours of Monday through Friday, 5:15 am - 7:30 pm at 320-222-9622.

    • Outdoor Fitness Classes and Child Watch are limited to 9 participants and the Fitness Center 10 per time slot and registration will open at 12:01 am the day prior to the scheduled class, child watch and center availability.
    • Lacrosse, Soccer, and Summer Day Camp require registration for the 4-week sessions of sports or 1 week sessions of Day Camp on-line. All sports classes will be limited to 9 kids per time slot. Summer Day Camp is limited to 54 campers per week and 18 LIT’s per week. Please register early, as weekly openings are filling.
    • One Pickleball Court in the Small Gym and One Racquetball Court will be available by reservation on Saturdays. Courts are limited to one individual or one household per time slot. Reservations can be made on Fridays by calling the Y at 320-222-9622 between 5:15 am – 7:30 pm.
    • Swimming Pool allows for one person per lane for lap swim. Up to two families may reserve a time slot during family swim, but each family will be required to remain with household unit and in separate areas while using the pool and at least one adult must be in the water with children. Reservations can be made the day prior by calling the Y at 320-222-9622 between 5:15 am – 7:30 pm. Please come to the Y in Swim Suits and plan on leaving in swim suits as locker rooms are not available at this time.

    Reservations & schedules

    Reservations are still required for fitness center, fitness classes, child watch, lap swim, family swim, water fitness classes, racquetball, and pickleball. Reservations are not required for locker room usage. Reservations can be made on-line or by calling the YMCA during business hours.

    The reservation system will allow for registration 24 hours in advance on a first come, first serve basis. You may register yourself for one fitness block, one fitness class, one lap swim time per day and each child on your unit for one one hour and 15 minute block of child watch time per day maximum.  Between each reservation time, the facility/equipment will be cleaned and sanitized for the next members.  We recommend arriving 5 minutes early to complete the screening/check in process and allow time to make it to your reserved area.

    member requirements to participate

    To participate in Y activities:

    • Face masks are required to be worn from arrival at the YMCA until strenuous activity begins and after the end of the class. 
    • Face coverings for children 3-12 are strongly recommended and caregivers will do their best to keep children wearing face coverings. 
    • Screening questions and temperature checks will be done at the YMCA front desk for outdoor fitness classes, upstairs fitness center times, and pool activities at the kids gym door for child watch, on the sports field for youth sports, at the 24/7 main entrance dooor for Pickleball and Racquetball.  All members are asked to sanitize or wash hands upon arrival.   
    • A new waiver and member code of conduct will need to be signed and submitted prior to first attended reservation time.  These waivers and the code of conduct will be available on the YMCA website reopening page so that you can bring it with you completed to save time.   
    • Fitness equipment will be available in the pool lobby for members to pick-up and take outside to their fitness class location.  Increased cleaning and sanitizing procedures are also in place and we ask participants to wipe down equipment before and after use as an additional safety precaution.
    • Towel Service is not available at this time.

    Membership updates

    Due to the limited availability at this time, the Y is not able to take reservations from non-members, guests or Nationwide Y Members.  We hope to be able to welcome you back in a future phase.

    For those members that have continued their membership with the Y through all this craziness, we deeply appreciate you and thank you. 

    As of June 1, all memberships on hold will begin to be charged the monthly hold fee of 50% of their current membership fee.  If you would like to make any changes to your membership, please contact the front desk. 

    The YMCA staff is excited to welcome you back to activities.  We continue to prepare for reopening more of the facility and adding activities and thank everyone for your support during this time.
